April 12, 2019
We are now firmly established in the second quarter of the nineteenth year of the new millennium.
This is the first of a four part series that looks ahead and outlines four HR trends that will impact employers in 2019.
More than ever, organizations will utilize HR as a strategic partner in achieving goals and delivering measurable results. A significant factor supporting this trend is that total compensation (wages, benefits and other costs) continues to occupy a significant portion of the average operating budget.
According to SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management), wages alone can account for 18% – 52%. Although the percentage total compensation carves out of the budget may vary widely across industries, it is a major factor for most employers. The HR department, or the HR function in a smaller organization, has a critical perspective on structuring fair, equitable and competitive compensation.
In addition, HR is in a unique position to provide insight and leadership on decisions that impact every department, team and employee. As HR engages with every single employee in some manner, it has access to data and trends like no other organizational function. HR is in a key role to be a major player in driving a consistent, healthy and productive organizational culture.
In its most distilled form Human Resources is about the human beings you employ. As these employees account for a large allocation of organizational resources AND are also — by far — your biggest competitive advantage, it makes good business sense to have HR involved in strategy at the highest level of decision making at your organization.
Thanks for reading! Tune in next week for part two in this series!
