Coronavirus: Supporting Employee Wellbeing

October 16, 2020

In our last post, we discussed the strain on employee health and wellbeing. In this post, we look at ways to support employees amidst the ongoing pandemic.

Communication

Consistent communication with employees is more important than ever. Taking the time to frequently check the pulse of the organization provides valuable insight and feedback. Assessing this feedback helps employers stay proactive and make adjustments to better support health and wellbeing.

Maintain open lines of communication and pay attention. Are employees encouraged to take regular breaks and to check in with one another, asking for and offering help when needed.

Model the Way

Leaders need to commit to modeling the way with health and wellbeing. Encourage self-care and walk the talk… employees notice when leaders are stressed and burned out. Normalize healthy and sustainable choices and make it a part of the conversation: getting quality sleep, unplugging from social media and screens, eating healthy, and getting exercise on a routine basis.

Wellbeing & Mindfulness

Being more present, calm and centered is a trainable skill. Decades of research support the positive impacts of mindfulness (also sometimes referred to as mental agility, training the brain, and positive intelligence), including reducing stress. Invest in mindfulness tools that support and train the mind.

Wellbeing Info

Make sure employees have access to the benefits that support their overall health and wellbeing. That may be an EAP (Employee Assistance Program) or support for the cost of a gym membership. Make sure these resources are front and center, and easily accessible for employees. Continue to seek out benefits that could be added to better support employees and their families.
