Updated Form I-9

Updated Form I-9

U.S. employers are required to use the newest version of Form I-9 to verify the employment eligibility of their workforce (as of 9/18/17).

The changes to the form are few, and primarily relate to the List of Acceptable Documents. For example, under Category A, documents listed include a U.S. Passport and U.S. Passport Card.

Retention Requirements

Retention and storage requirements remain the same.

Employers must retain each employee’s completed Form I-9 while the employee is on the payroll. Once an employee no longer works for the organization, follow the retention guidelines:

  • either three years after the date of hire, or
  • one year after the termination date,
  • whichever is later.

The Bottom Line

Double check that you are using the most updated form. To make sure you are using the correct version: the updated form has a revision date of 07/17/17 N in the lower left hand corner.
